six Lives

Behind “Six Lives”

Something I love most about interviewing other artists with my cohost melodywhore on Situation 47 is hearing them tell their stories, reaching back to experiences sometimes from their childhood. The details we remember, how we remember them, and how we sometimes as artists weave them into the stories we tell through our craft has always fascinated me.

Having worked with Dogtablet several times prior, I was thrilled to do so again on “Six Lives”. The project sounded intriguing – both the concept of the featured vocalists all having a story to tell, and being able to tell mine.  So, upon hearing everyone else’s tales, naturally I had to know what was behind them.

Marselle Hodges (The Blue Hour)

Music | The Blue Hour (bandcamp.com)

“All Fall Down”

Upon hearing the creaking sound in the music Martin had given to her, Marselle was reminded of a swing set, which in turn made her think of how much she loved swing sets as a child. “I would reach out with my feet trying to get as high as I could. This one time, I got so high I felt like I was flying! I jumped off feeling like the momentum would carry me through the air. But I didn’t land so gracefully.” She thankfully escaped serious injury and was left with a scar on her forehead.

“But even though it was painful and left a scar, I still would reach as high as I could. Again and again and again.”
“Metaphor? Maybe”

Swing sets behind her perhaps, Marselle still flies in her dreams.

Jane Jensen

Tinted Windows

“This song came to me from Dogtablet at the perfect time, to allow me to express some dark and uncomfortable feelings. I don’t do much of that in my day-to-day life so music is my safe space for everything in my life that breaks, to just live in peace, in a broken way”.

“Also, the tone of Martin’s tracks felt darkly unsettling under a sheen of smooth listenability, which reminded me of the Netflix series YOU, about a stalker, which my daughter and I had been binging”.

Jane took traces of her own experiences and, “shellacked them onto an ill-intentioned stalker and set the scene in my beloved and trusty black Cadillac, my other safe space, whose windows I recently had tinted.”

Asked about those personal experiences to which she refers, she recounted two terrifying situations from her past which happened around the same time. One involving “disturbing letters from a prison inmate who was a fan of Tromeo & Juliet” when she was a young mom.

The other being a home invasion where she was held at gunpoint.

“I had a show that week. We were raising funds for the democratic party, for Obama – in Indianapolis. I was playing with The Born Again Floozies. I got through the show, but that was my last show for, well – since 2008 I guess.” Leaving that all behind her now, she very much looks forward to her upcoming show in September with Paul Barker, her very first show since.

Betty X

In the Night

Fascinated by clone stories such as those in the TV series “Orphan Black”, Cronenberg fan Betty X took her inspiration from one of his movies which featured clones in a very unique way.

“The inspiration for ‘In the Night‘ comes from the unsettling allure of Cronenberg’s Infinity Pool—a descent into a world where one is seduced by the intoxicating pull of hedonistic orgies… with their own clones.”

“Someone like you, someone like me… In the night, we’re tangled in desire”

Jennie Bellestar (The Bellestars)

“Stay Away”

This track featuring Jennie Bellestar describes the unexpected consequences to selling ones soul…”you signed the deal and lost control…”

The story as she describes it – “In the pursuit of fame and fortune Sandy is presented with a choice. Sign the deal and you will have riches beyond your wildest dreams, by not signing you will be destined to remain invisible in the industry you have always dreamt of being part of.

After succumbing to temptation, she realized soon after that there were stipulations to the deal, once signed she would never own her soul again. For her there could be no turning back and though the fame and fortune was everything she had wished for, it pales in comparison to simply having the freedom to be herself. By signing the deal, she unwittingly became a slave without a voice. Rubbing shoulders with people she really did not resonate with.”

Sapphira Vee

“The Red Tile”

When I was a kid in school, I was given one of those tests where you answer a bunch of questions about yourself and then they tell you what careers might suit you when you grow up.

Mine came back “Private Investigator”, (not hard to believe if you know me and my insatiable curiosity) which, in my child’s mind, translated somehow to “Spy”.  And I’ve been intrigued with the thought of being a spy ever since.

The Red Tile” gives you a peek into a day in the life of an agent, who undergoes an unsettling debriefing, which includes getting drugged, then getting reassigned.  All in a room with hideous “what IS this place and who decorates this way” red tile, to the sound of water dripping. Once the deal is made, off she goes for another adventure.

Coral Scere (Scere)

“Blood Moon”

“Blood moon…Unfold and swallow me”

Says Coral, “I find Martin’s music so haunting and evocative that everything seems to flow naturally through me.”  She immediately finds inspiration for melody and lyrics when working with specific artists including Martin, “as there is something in their music that I emotionally connect with.”

“Blood Moon” is “essentially a selenophile praying to the moon for forgiveness and comfort.” She believes that we are “all impacted in some way by both the moon and the tides.”

Martin King

And finally, Martin King’s inspiration behind putting these six tales together:

“It really started while listening to Betty X on a track called The Velvet Mind, I’d been wanting to write something for her to include on a Dogtablet project for a while, and it really put me in a Twin Peaks kind of place.

I thought it might be cool to write a series of tracks that were like musical versions of 50s / 60s film vignettes. Short stories that appeared important to the narrator either fiction or non-fiction. Then really it made sense to have an all-female cast to make a more natural thread throughout the project. The music was to become the story background and the vocal, the focus point. I’m amazed at how brilliantly it all came together, and with almost zero guidance or input from me, all the tracks started to come together exactly as I imagined.”

Six artists.

Six stories.

Six Lives.

“Transversal” album review

“Transversal” album art and ParaLuna Records logo

Upon hearing of Tess LaCoell’s (Violet Wanda) collaboration with DJ Marionette for the Trans charity album “Transversal”, I said I want to hear it as Tess made an intriguing argument that we all should.  After listening to the first 3 tracks, I told Tess that not only would I play the entire album in the Overtime section on my Birthday edition of my “New Music Fridays of the Modern DARKSCENE” show on June 28,  and that it would be ideal as I hadn’t done anything for PRIDE (even though I consider myself an ally).  Not only did I promise that, I foolishly also promised I would review the entire album even though I  previously only did one or two line reviews of singles I really liked.

Now I rarely go into genres and sub-genres on my show as I askew pigeon-holing band into into static labels (“It’s A Trap”).  Instead I consider my shows “Genre Fluid”, a term I borrowed months ago from  Betty X’s exclusive T-shirt design.  Now that seems like a piece of kismet as Tess wrote in the Liner Notes of “Transversal” that Betty X has a saying, “Artists Helping Artists”. I just hope this DJ can do the same with this review.  Lofty goals but honestly I could play this entire album, soup to nuts, anytime.  Buy it on Bandcamp at:

https://paralunarecords.bandcamp.com/album/transversal

Top tracks include, in track order, Dead Girl Dancing, Loneliness is A Poison, Panic, I’m A Raver, Countdown, A Trap, and Pre-Sentient (the Violent Wanda remix of the Valor 13 track).

1. Tears for the Dying – Dead Girl Dancing

Gorgeous synth starts this song and album off and sets the bar for this album before the beat kicks in to a danceable song of death coming for you, feeling disoriented, and realizing there’s nothing tethering you to the World anymore.  “See me, hear me, take my hand/Let′s go for a walk in the boneyard/

See me, hear me, take my hand/Let’s dance in the fog”.  Very deep.  Not about giving up on life but moving on and finding reason to dance anyway.

2. DJ Marionette – Splinter

A dark rhythmic danceable number that would keep me on the dancefloor when I was ready to stop.

3. Ghoststomper – AIRLOCKCONTAINMENT

Plodding stomper that keeps you sane while your computer runs its end of day repots.

4. Dee Decay – Maijulie

A hard rhythmic mystical instrumental romp

5. Hyperestis – Loneliness Is A Poison

“Loneliness is a poison/delivered by a kiss/ remember if I get too close/always remember this…”  The grinding rhythm of this song starts and you think it’s a lovers’ lament after a breakup with their last argument echoing in their head and turns into a dark revenge fantasy.

6. Zvrra – TTF (Time To Fight)

This is a whirling dirvish EBM instrumental.  Total fun.

7. Cameron Evesque Davis – Panic

Breathing through a panic attack.  Whether the panic or real or not this song could be the danceable mantra to shake yourself loose.

8. Jordana – I’m A Raver

I can’t tell you much about this drum and bass “raver,”  as it made me want to jump on the dancefloor leaving my phone and wheelchair behind.  Powerful stuff.

10. Violet Wanda – Countdown

What can I say about Tess LaCoell’s contribution to this album except it’s the best instrumental on the album.

11. Jordana – A Trap

This track is the emotional and spiritual center of this album centering on being descriminated against for who you are and who you love.  Plus it helps that this has the beats that flows that makes one want to dance as you fight the powers that be and are the brick walls that would dare to snatch your own empowerment.

9. Valor 13 – Pre-Sentient

This electronic steps through an AI’s awakening into sentience initiated by Valor 13.

12. Valor 13 – Pre-Sentient (Violet Wanda remix)

A faster, danceable remix by Violet Wanda that shows our now Sentient hero, ready to fight for the validation of its own existence whether regardless if the sentience is just a veil for what this album is about.

RETRONOMICON on ParaLuna Records

I love it when this scene comes together to step up for one of it’s own. Legendary Bass player for My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult/Pigface/ect Charles Levi was diagnosed with vascular dementia. He had a stroke. Has been taking expensive medications and is in the fight of his life. A ton of great artists and ParaLuna Records stepped up to release this compilation of 80’s covers to help offset the costs of his treatment. It is a heartwarming tribute to a beloved figure in our scene that proves what we are capable of during folks darkest moments. In addition to the album I have also posted Charles’s gofund me page.

  17. Stoneburner – “The Crab Song” / Faith No More >> Steven Archer

Apology KinkWest End Girls (Pet Shop Boys) – Augustus Watkins the co founder of GIVE/TAKE records from Minneapolis with a glitchy synth sass take on the iconic PSB hit. I really like the sax solo synth breakdown. The vocals do a nice homage while adding a bit more whisper and smoke.

LeviLevi vs Bangalore ft. Betty XHit me with your Best Shot (Pat Benatar) – So here you had Charles playing bass, Betty X lashing vocals like a whip crack, Tim Pethtel on guitar, Christopher Rodriguez on synths turning the pop classic into an acid static club banger. Feels very true to the original while turning the chaos up to 11. Betty X in particular has done a great job of shouting out from the rooftops about this compilation. Love this energy.

THE DEVIL’S DUE | Betty X (bandcamp.com)

SUSmothered Hope (Skinny Puppy) – I hadn’t heard a ton from Ursa Minor and Sarah Emilie out of Montreal, but I adore the fact they did a Skinny Puppy cover among a lot of synthpop so far. They absolutely crushed this too. Elegant beauty with fairy fire intensity. The cadence on the vocal delivery is spot on with such lovely contrast to the original. This cover really showed me their best.

Novelty (Single) | SU (bandcamp.com)

MicrowavedSo Alive (Love and Rockets) – I was obsessed with this song when it was in heavy rotation on MTV. It lived in a non-stop rotation in my head. Des Moines Iowa artist Gabe Wilkinson did a wonderful flip of the script with this grungy wall of sound pushing forward across hot sand. The vocals have a cool gang style doubling punk flavor. Distinct but immediately recognizable. Gabe is well known for his collaboration and remix work, so this cover really highlights his talents.

The Dead Shall Walk Remixes: Volume 6 | Microwaved (bandcamp.com)

Doors in the LabyrinthDead Man’s Party (Oingo Boingo) – I’ve heard a few cover songs now from Pittsburgh doom folk artist Josh Loughrey. He always finds a really fresh take and makes the song his own. This was my favorite yet. Classic Danny Elfman darksynth bop was stretched into a misty translucence like a funeral dirge which matches perfectly with the title. A completely different vibe from the original but one I will always hear in this song now.

In Memoriam | Doors In The Labyrinth (bandcamp.com)

Missing in StarsHold me Now (Thompson Twins) – This I fell in love with less from how different it was from the original and more how different it was from the usual vocal style of  Dan Guenther. It sill holds that ethereal synth beauty but behind the smile are large sharp teeth barely holding back a menacing growl. That double bass drum breakdown is grinding with pure power. Chefs Kiss.

Hurt | Missing in STARS (bandcamp.com)

DogtabletHollow Hills (Bauhaus) Living Legend Martin King and the project Dogtablet with this percussion sorrow jazz cover of the Bauhaus classic rising from the boggy depths. I’m not sure who was doing the amazing banshee backup vocals but they are a perfect compliment. Martin always captures a moment.

The Summertime EP | Dogtablet (bandcamp.com)

Hororhaus ft. Bow Ever DownTake my Breath Away (Berlin) – This lovely shadow ballad appeared on out S & S singles chart previous. Kim’s voice rings with passion and power and Scott has taken the original down temp and seasoned it with chaos and static. Great use of his growling backup vocals to sharpen the angles. A perfect addition to your next goth prom.

next door neighbor | hororhaus (bandcamp.com)

Goodbye | Bow Ever Down (bandcamp.com)

StoneburnerThe Crab Song (Faith No More) Leave it to Steven Archer to make things weird. Instead of covering an 80s synth song, he chose chaos prog rock band Faith No More, and then converts it into worldbeat chaos apocalypse industrial. I love it, I love everything here. From the chanting, the screaming, the glitch, and the operatic explosive anger. When Steven covers a song it becomes his own.

The Great Filter | Stoneburner (bandcamp.com)

This entire album is a great way to find new talent you will love, as well as support Charles Levi who has been an important part of the scene and inspired so many.
