The Russian White – Funeral Art

The Russian WhiteDistortion Production artist from Reading Pennsylvania with a new terror disco release on October 4th 2024 just in time for the spooky season. Cathedral pageantry organs and demonic chants set the stage for a sinister tale of synthesized anguish. Masterfully mixed and mastered by Tim Heireth who highlights Tom’s vocals of spewed vulgarity at an uncaring god.

The Number H: Vocals on Funeral Art

This is an album of sinister specters singing New Order “Corruption and Lies” hooks in a post-apocalyptic concrete bunker. That narrative line between science fiction and supernatural terror. A glorious synthesis of era and genre clashing together into something fresh and disconcerting.

Favorite Tracks: Vampire Drugs – I love the glitchy witchhaus vibes of this slowly expanding burner. Tom’s overlapping vocals of distorted rage ghost and clean expressive emo create a clashing barrier of modern and traditional that hits you right in the heart.

We Disappear – This track really captures that retro New Order meets filthy sensual club glitch. It’s dangerous, fresh and modern in an infectious way that makes steam rise from the dancefloor.

I love the mysterious blend of modern electronica and homage to the traditional past. Be on the lookout for live performances. This is a band at the top of my must see live soon list.

Glass Apple Bonzai “Brother Bones”

The latest album from Canadian dark synth artist Daniel Belasco releases this long coming and extremely personal album about dealing with the passing of his oldest brother in 2021 on Distortion Records. Daniel has continued to amass respect from music insiders for his song crafting expertise and beautiful compositions. Remaining largely underrated by overall mainstream audiences in spite of his infectious melodies and retro style.

Daniel has a true gift as a tunesmith. An ability to find complex hidden paths to the most infectious melodies. His voice is big. A bit golden age superhero cheese, that could easily veer into tongue and cheek. It’s the honesty in the lyrics that make it ring genuine. That makes that big blasting tone so powerful. This is a record that never hides behind walls. It has a Saturday morning cartoons with a bowl of cereal innocence, stained by the wisdom of one thousand heartbreaks.

Daniel Belasco says: “Brother Bones is, quite honestly, the most personal album Glass Apple Bonzai has ever released.”

Favorite Tracks:

Toys: – I really love the range Daniel shows here. For someone known for synthwave, this track brings a prog rock complexity and skill level on base and guitar. Dare I say it has a Rush style of instrument mastery and purity of lyrics. I’m not sure if he is doubling his voice for these harmonies or having a guest, but the effect on the chorus is beautiful.

The Changes In Your Heart: – I’m always a sucker for the track on a great record that seems to pull in a different direction. Most of this album has a sense of recalling happy memories. Thinking on a way to move forward from loss. The Changes In Your Heart has a much darker tone that plunges into murky waters. The psychedelic breakdown lends a further note of spiritual introspection. This was a perfect note of contrast that made every other track burn brighter.

Sounds and Shadows Interview with Richie V. Suriv of MissFit Toys

Recently John Wisniewski had a discussion, with Richie V. Suriv of Orlando, Florida electro rockers Miss Fit Toys. With a new album out Dec 2022 called “The Nine” on Distortion Records let’s hear from the bands founder.

The Nine | MissFit Toys (bandcamp.com)

Richie V. Suriv: Vocals/Programming

Travis Lee: Drums

Hide – Synth/Keys/Programming

Jayson Fiend – Keys

Tyler DiCarlo – Guitar

1. When did MissFit Toys originally form and what prompted you to start the band?

MissFit Toys started around 2007 as a solo project, just as a form of therapy. It all became a more serious thing when I started working with Jayson Smith in 2009. He was the one who booked our first show and got me to take the chance.

2. What do you consider to be the biggest inspiration for you to write your music and lyrics?

The music is always written first and is inspired by my overall feeling during that particular day. Some songs wait for years before they ever get lyrics if they ever do, mostly to make sure the song is able to reach its full potential instead of just cranking it out just because we can. Lyrics are a bit more tricky for me but I would have to say The Bible is what I reference the most.

With the Covid Era in mind, could you tell us what was it like recording the new album “The Nine”?

The Nine” was not really affected by the pandemic, rather it was mostly hardware and computer issues that gave us the most trouble.

4. MissFit Toys will be going on tour in Mexico supporting Hocico very soon. Is this the first time you are performing outside of the US? Any special plans for your performances?

Yes this will be our first time outside of the country. As for any special plans for the shows, we do have some things planned but I can’t give anymore info on that at this time.

5. I read that the MissFit Toys live shows are very dramatic. How was the audience reaction when you supported Hocico for the recent US tour?

The US tour came with excellent feedback, I honestly believe it was that feedback that played a contributing factor in our consideration for this upcoming tour with Hocico.

6. In your opinion, do you find the industrial and related dark scenes in a good place like these days?

The industrial community as a whole feels like it’s dying out, and that could be our perspective based on the fact we perform an older style of aggrotech. In spite of that feeling, we love what we do and will continue to perform as long as there are people who connect with our music.
The only way the industrial community can grow is if we all support our local artists. The torch can only pass on as long as there is another generation willing to carry it.

7. Do you have any current favorite industrial, goth or darkwave bands?

It’s hard to pick “favorites” because you are always going to think of someone else you should have added after the fact. But some of our favorite local Florida industrial bands are both 13th Angel and SML8.

https://jendraven13thangel1.bandcamp.com/album/fallen-angel

8. What lies ahead in the future for MissFit Toys?

For the immediate future, we have just released a music video for “Submit to Slaughter,” a song off our new album “The Nine,” along with upcoming dates with Hocico in Mexico another east coast tour in late 2023.

Nothing Tastes Better Than Buying a New Release On Bandcamp Day Feels.

As the first Friday of February descends upon us Bandcamp (The best way to support new artists) has brought back Bandcamp Friday where every cent spent goes to the artists making the music. Here in Michigan we are buried in fluffy crystal snow and have no where to go. So make a cup of hot coco, grab a warm blanket, and tuck into some of the great releases which have found their way into my collection.

Sapphira VeeAerial HumanSapphiria Vee has sprouted wings and taken to stormy skies with the newest release “Ariel Human“. A bracing new pace and sinister promise. Featuring a rouges gallery of impressive collaboration from Jean Marc- Lederman, Roger Ebner, then Mixed and mastered by sonic wizard Jules Seifert. Send your mind a flight. Sapphira’s ability to draw talent towards her with both her powerful voice and magnetic personality gives her access to a wide brigade of masterwork tools. As a producer she knows just when and where to implement each sound like a conductor in a symphony. Available 2/4/22 on Distortion Records.

The Palest GreyAlways Haunted – Long have I yearned for this release of wine stained lips and flapping leather wing goodness from Malek, Ripley, and dear friend Azy of (Obscura Undead). Lofi open maw bounding horror charging down a darkened hallway by furious clomping drums and tendril rope guitars. This is wonderful music created by people who LOVE batcave goth. You can really hear that homage in the intensity and intent. The EP also includes a Virgin in Veil cover which is a powerful deep cut. I love how the vocals have this hazy shadow monster undefinable quality that fluctuates in range and ferocity. Out on 2/4/22

Katy Needs A LifeWith Friends Like Bees – This is another special release. I feel like I watched it grow up. Born here right in Kalamazoo MI, in Collin Schipper‘s (Amaranth) studio, done by Katy May (Sounds and Shadows). This record is everything I love about ultra sad dreamgaze pop, with none of the pretention I often associate with the genre. Every song is a flailing arms, heart flinging, explosion of narrative intensity. The music of Reggie, David, and Jake is a furious and frantic cohesion of chaos and pastel dreams. Katy has a voice full of purity and unapologetic raw truth that blasts through a sea of cold ultra produced crystal. This is such wonderous walking around with your own thoughts music.

Stand Out Track: I’m Going Down – This album is such a complete journey, I love each story and song. That said this track is constantly in my playlist when I need a moment. It’s a heavy builder that taps the emotion of great hits like Black Parade by MCR. It’s a nuclear unhinged crest of beauty and pain flung forth with reckless abandon. The perfect closer to the album.

This record is the first full length with the entire band and spells a glorious future for Katy and company. On top of that it is expertly mastered by none other than Jason Corbett (Jackknife Sound Studios) (Actors). I think sometimes those of us that do musical support of others get lost when it comes to our own projects. This is an unforgettable must have record.

Black Rose BurningThe Wheel – It’s strange, I feel like I have already reviewed this record, because I listen to it all the time. George Grant is a legendary part of the New York darkscene who has produced and written magnificent music that infuses heady concepts of fantasy and science fiction into beautiful towers of narrative beauty. With that history laid out, this album is the true opus of his career. A distinctive and complex expression of the modern post punk/darkwave scene. George has one of those voices of shooting star power which rings in the memory every time you hear it. I have said before it feels like Peter Gabriel doing goth music about Issac Asimov. This album is a must have in your collection. Also Mastered by Jason Corbett (Maybe you should ask him about mastering your band)

Stand Out Track: A Little Too Little – Grinding and filthy bass driving contrasts Georges lifting windswept beautiful vocals. I’m genuinely amazed this wasn’t a hit from the 80’s I had just forgotten about. A pleading love song tempered with regret. This song stabs me right through the heart every time.

Draven’s Mixtape:1994 Revisited

Fans of the movie (and comic book), The Crow, will appreciate this homage to the original soundtrack, courtesy of Distortion Productions. I’m sure for many of us, as well as many of the featured artists, this film was our first taste of some great and seminal music in our formative years. The songs are treated with reverence, but a definite youthful enthusiasm makes them seem fresh again; namely, Enchepalon’s take on the Joy Division staple, Dead Souls. Cocksure kicks the listener in the teeth with their rendition of The Cure’s Burn. I was amazed at how a band like Caustic could draw such a radical departure from Suicide’s (via Rollins Band) Ghost Rider. This is a fun ride that doesn’t sound like a rehash of 1990s alternative music. It easily stands on its own as well as being an excellent companion piece to the original soundtrack.

There are certain movies that change you, that leave an impression. This was The Crow for me in high school. To take the aesthetic and darkness of living outside the culture around me, and make that cool. If only for a moment. Add to that the setting of Detroit where I fled the suburbs on weekends to act out my misspent youth. Although Brandon Lee and his tragic story was an antihero I was drawn to. The real star character of this film was the soundtrack. A tape that lived in my cars tape deck playing over and over driving down Woodward Ave, seeing the passing street lamps, the mystery moisture rising from sewer caps. This soundtrack was an essential building block of who I was. Here Jim has brought together another team of amazing modern artists to fuse new life in the nostalgic images that still hold strong today. I will discuss a few of the 14 wonderful tracks each bringing their own take on a movie that revitalized a subculture.

Cocksure – Chicago Industrial legends Chris Connelly and Jason Novak take on The Cure “Burn“. A song so powerful and image-stirring that Robert Smith can’t remember writing it. Which I think says more about how many great songs The Cure have. Recently I saw Stabbing Westward play a cover of burn at Cold Waves. This version took a much different direction of electronic explosion. Connelly has a range to rival Smith’s and gives a cracking emotional delivery. A powerful beginning to the narrative.

https://cocksure.bandcamp.com/

Go Fight – Another Chicago industrial pioneer Jim Marcus takes on the slippery opium fueled slither of Stone Temple Pilots “Big Empty” . Marcus cuts through the haze of the original to season with sharper edges and gritty streets. I loved the clarity he brought with his voice and forceful drum strikes of this bright and cutting interpretation.

https://gofight.bandcamp.com/

Null Device – Madison WI EDM artists Null Device did one of my underrated sneaky favorite tracks on this all star soundtrack “Color Me Once” by Violent Femmes. This ended up being my favorite cover of the many strong offerings. A bold shift from the original haunted folk alternative twang. Shattering strong drum beats and sweeping dynamic changes. Eric’s voice drips with anger and honey, contrasted by the harmonies of Jill Sheridan. I love that he keeps Gordo’s cadence while giving rich and beautiful tone. Sky splitting guitar solo to bring the action to a head. This one hit me hard in all the feels.

Panic Lift – Next up a New Jersey band I owe an apology to. I have criminally under covered them in spite of every time they cross my radar saying this is absolutely astounding I should listen to this all the time. James Frances and company had the unenviable task of taking on Helmet‘s “Milktoast“. Page Hamilton has a special place for me in being an artist who got placed between punk and grunge yet was one of the more complex progressive musicians of his time. So it was going to take a lot to impress me. I was duly impressed. Helmet has such an organic sound and the buzzing rippling electronic energy captured that constantly shifting time and chanting rhythm. I love the spinning siren effect. Softening the edges without decreasing the danger.

Leaether Strip Red Lokust and Tragic ImpulseJim Semonik (Distortion Records) who made this compilation possible teamed up with Claus Larson (Leatherstrip) and Pittsburgh’s Tragic Impulse to sonically assault the My Life With the Thrill Kill Cult song “After the Flesh“. So much happening in this rapid fire stinging whip lash electronic sensory explosion. Wonderful use of electronic drum sounds to create a small club punk rock tone. FIRE IT UP! FIRE IT UP!

ego likeness – Our dear friends Donna and Steven from Baltimore’s Ego Likeness added a dreamy mist sway version of Medicine‘s “Time Baby II“. Donna’s voice is warm and wispy cutting to the front more than the original and adding a nice resonance. The music holds that same bouncing tone from the bottom of a K hole. I expected nothing less, it’s Donna and Steven.

Jim does it again, fusing that place between my youth and the bands I love today. Just like the original soundtrack, this album is a great way to touch base with some of the hottest acts in the modern scene while playing your favorite scenes from the past.
